Reducing noise with replacement windows
Traffic and aircraft noise come in mostly through the windows, and the right glass, frame and installation keep most of it out.
Traffic, aircraft and neighbors all find their way indoors, and the windows are usually where they enter. Replacement windows are one of the most effective ways to bring a house back to quiet.
Glass does most of the work
A traditional single-pane window offers little resistance to sound. The glass is thin and there is nothing behind it. Double- and triple-pane windows add layers of glass with insulating gas between them, and each layer makes it harder for sound to pass through.
Laminated glass goes further. A special interlayer is bonded between the panes, and it noticeably increases the noise reduction of the window.
The frame matters too
Frame material plays a part. Vinyl is known for its insulating properties. It conserves energy and also reduces sound transmission, absorbing vibration that would otherwise carry into the room. Vinyl frames paired with laminated glass make a strong combination.
Specify for the noise you have
Not all noise is the same, so the window should be chosen for the source. Describe the problem in detail to whoever specifies the windows, and let the configuration follow from it.
Low-frequency sound, such as aircraft, is the hardest to stop. It is better controlled with thicker glass and larger air gaps between the panes.
Installation
The best window performs poorly if it is badly fitted. Any gap around the frame is a path for sound. Careful professional installation, with every joint sealed, is what lets the frame, sash and glass work together as intended.
Beyond the window
New windows are the largest single step toward a quieter house, but they are not the only one. Heavy curtains or acoustic blinds add another layer of absorption. In particularly noisy settings, soundproofing in the walls and ceilings completes the work.
The result is more than comfort. A quiet house is a better place to rest, to work and to live, and that adds to its value.
