Questions to ask before scheduling a window replacement
A short list of questions, asked early, sets clear expectations for the whole project.
A window replacement takes planning, and much of it comes down to choosing the right company. Before you book a date, it helps to ask a few direct questions. The answers tell you how the work will be done and what to expect, and they set clear expectations on both sides. These are the questions worth asking, grouped by subject.
The company
- How long have you been in business?
- What kinds of projects do you usually take on, and what do you specialize in?
- What training and qualifications do your installers have?
A clear understanding of the company’s background gives you confidence in its ability to do the work well.
The products
- Which window materials do you offer?
- Which manufacturers do you work with?
- What warranties come with the products?
- How do the proposed windows perform for energy efficiency, durability and maintenance?
The installation
Good windows depend on good installation. Ask what the steps are, how long the work will take and how disruption to the household will be kept to a minimum.
If the house has particular challenges, such as older construction or unusual window shapes, raise them now and ask how they will be handled.
The cost
- Can you provide an itemized estimate covering the windows, installation and any additional fees?
- What are your payment terms?
A precise picture of cost, set out line by line, avoids surprises later and makes the budget easier to plan.
After installation
- Do you clean up and dispose of the old windows?
- How do service calls work if something needs attention?
- How are warranty claims handled?
The relationship should not end when the last window goes in. Knowing what happens afterward is part of a smooth project, and it gives you peace of mind long after the crew has left.
